Why This Recipe Is Great for Postpartum Recovery
- High in Protein - With 31 grams of protein per serving, this chili helps support tissue repair, muscle recovery, and healing after childbirth while keeping you feeling full and satisfied.
- Rich in Iron - Lean ground beef provides heme iron, the form of iron your body absorbs most efficiently. Rebuilding your iron stores can help support healthy energy levels, oxygen transport throughout the body, and reduce the risk of postpartum iron deficiency.
- Vitamin A - Sweet potatoes are one of the richest food sources of beta-carotene, which your body converts into vitamin A. Vitamin A plays an important role in tissue repair, skin healing, immune function, and healthy vision. If you're breastfeeding, vitamin A also contributes to the nutritional quality of breast milk and supports your baby's growth and immune development.
- Vitamin C and Lycopene - tomatoes are rich in lycopene, a powerful antioxidant that helps protect cells from oxidative stress. They also contribute vitamin C, which is essential for collagen production and wound healing. Vitamin C also enhances your body's absorption of the iron found in the beef and beans, making this combination especially beneficial.
- Potassium - Sweet potatoes, black beans, and tomatoes are all excellent sources of potassium, an important electrolyte that supports hydration, muscle contractions, and normal nerve function. Staying well-hydrated is especially important for breastfeeding mothers and can help support overall recovery.
- Fiber - Black beans and sweet potatoes provide both soluble and insoluble fiber to help keep digestion moving comfortably. Many new moms experience constipation after delivery due to hormonal changes, reduced activity, pain medications, or iron supplements. A fiber-rich meal paired with plenty of fluids can help support regular bowel movements.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is beef and sweet potato chili healthy?
Yes! Let's break down the macros:
Calories - 370
Protein - 31g
Carbohydrates - 33g
Fat - 12g
Fiber - 8g
Can I make this chili ahead of time?
Yes! I have been making all types of chili for the past 10 years and I swear they are even better leftover than they are when served right away. That extra time in your refrigerator allows the flavors to develop and come together perfectly. Chili can last up to 4 days in the refrigerator but if you want to prepare this meal to eat at a later date, it freezes beautifully as well!
Can I use ground turkey instead of ground beef?
Definitely! Ground turkey or ground chicken work if you are looking for a leaner option. The flavor may be a bit lighter but the chili will still be hearty and delicious.
How can I make this chili spicy?
Yes! You can add diced jalapeños, cayenne pepper, chipotle peppers in adobo, or your favorite hot sauce to increase the heat. I generally recommend keeping the recipe mild and then having those who want it spicier add hot sauce or chopped jalapenos in their own bowl. My kids have a really tough time with any level of heat so I keep it as mild as possible so it is still family friendly.
Why put sweet potatoes in chili?
Sweet potatoes add a natural sweetness to balance the savory seasonings while also providing fiber, potassium, vitamin A, and complex carbohydrates. They make the chili more filling and give it a unique texture that's perfect for family dinners and meal prep.
