15 Beach Trip Must-Haves for Families with Toddlers and Preschoolers
A beach day with little kids can be magical...or it can feel like packing for a week-long camping trip. Between sunscreen, snacks, toys, swimsuits, and towels, it's easy to forget something important.
After plenty of beach trips with toddlers and preschoolers, I've narrowed down the items that actually make a difference. These are the things I never leave home without because they make setup easier, keep kids comfortable, and help parents spend less time managing chaos and more time enjoying the day.
Whether you're heading out for a quick afternoon or a full week at the beach, these family-tested essentials deserve a spot on your packing list.
Why You'll Love This List
- Saves time packing
- Makes beach setup much easier
- Keeps toddlers comfortable and entertained
- Includes practical items parents actually use
- Perfect for day trips and beach vacations
Let's start with the gear:
Beach Wagon

If you are only going to invest in one beach item for your family, make it a beach wagon. Trust me when I say that trying to carry towels, snacks, toys, sunscreen, and a toddler through a crowded parking lot is not how you want to start your vacation. Make sure to look for oversized wheels designed for sand, a foldable frame for easy storage, and plenty of pockets for organizing smaller items. A beach wagon will save you time and effort so that you can spend more time having fun!
Shade Tent

A shade tent completely changed how long our family was actually able to enjoy the beach. Instead of packing up after an hour because everyone is overheated, the kids have a cool place to eat snacks and rest. Beach shade tents also provide privacy for diaper changes, breastfeeding or even naps (if you get lucky)! They also protect your family from the wind so that you can enjoy a sand free lunch while taking a break from the rays.
Bogg

I didn't understand the hype around these bags until I finally got one. Now it lives in my trunk from Memorial Day through Labor Day. You are definitely going to need a water resistant bag large enough to fit all of your essentials. The Bogg bag even has the added bonus of being able to stand up on its own so your stuff isn't falling out into the sand. There are also tons of accessories available! I use the cooler insert and the organizational bags all summer long. The one downside is that my toddlers know EXACTLY where to find the snacks without asking.
Next up, items to keep kids safe and comfortable:
Mineral sunscreen
Keep your little ones safe! Want to protect their delicate skin from the sun's rays while minimizing their exposure to harsh chemicals? Opt for 50 spf mineral sunscreen to keep them safe all afternoon. They have become quite mainstream and can be found at most grocery stores. Normally I use the lotion formula but I switched it up last beach trip and bought a spray version. Game changer! It was super quick and easy to apply.
UPF clothing
UPF clothing keeps skin safe without having to use an entire bottle of expensive sunscreen. I am always thankful for this type of coverage when my kids are trying to wriggle out of my reach as I slather them up. More coverage = less work!
Sun hats
Great to protect their faces but also protects their eyes. Little ones have a tough time keeping sunglasses on their faces and these hats allow them to play for hours without the sun in their eyes.
Water shoes
I am all about bare feet! Sensory experiences through bare feet are so important. So why did I include water shoes on my list? That sand is HOT and those shells are SHARP and you will want the options to protect their little feet if the need arises.
Snacks, snacks, and more snacks
This should probably be number one on my list! Toddlers and preschoolers are always hungry in between meals and it is best to be prepared. Especially when often times the only option for food would be a long, hot trek to a concession stand where you will pay $6 for a bag of chips. Pack your own healthy options to keep under the shade tent and you're golden. It is also nice to be able to offer them when kids need a break from the sun or you need a 5 minute break from chasing them up and down the sand. Pro tip: watch for seagulls!
Reusable water bottles
Stay hydrated! Enough said. Well actually, I should also say, make sure you bring a water bottle for yourself too, Mama. It is easy to forget to take care of yourself with everything else is going on.
Try leaning into nostalgic fun:
Bucket, shovels, bubbles, a beach ball and a dump truck
There are so many extravagant options for beach toys nowadays but I can tell you that pretty much NONE of them are necessary for kids to have fun at the beach. A bucket and shovel go a long way! You can collect shells or little creatures, make sandcastles, fill a hole with water. Other classics include bubbles for chasing, beach balls for bonking and a dump truck for hours of fun.
Don't forget items that make your life easier as a busy mom:
Extra towels
It is never a bad idea to bring extra towels. You will need some for drying off, some for sitting and some for getting clean before getting back in the car at the end of a long day.
Wet/dry bag
Great for tossing wet bathing suits in before the car ride. No one wants a wet car seat that smells like low tide for the next week.
Complete change of clothes
Again, to protect your car and sanity. Also if you are feeling super brave and feel like going anywhere after the beach, you will want them in clean clothes.
Wet wipes
Sticky, sandy faces and hands will need to be wiped multiple times, I guarantee it.
Portable car vacuum

To help clean up the aftermath of a fun filled day of creating memories with your favorite tiny humans!
Frequently Asked Questions
Why mineral sunscreen versus chemical sunscreen?
Mineral sunscreen provides instant protection by forming a barrier on top of skin. It is safer for people with sensitive skin, it doesn't clog pores, and it doesn't lead to the skin absorbing potentially toxic chemicals found in other chemical sunscreens.
There are so many new beach toys on the market, why are is a bucket and shovel the top recommendation?
There is nothing better than open ended imaginative play! Simple toys encourage more thought and engaged interactions which lead to them staying busier, longer. Ditch the battery operated beach toys and go for the classics.
What is the best beach bag for families?
We love a waterproof tote like a Bogg Bag because it's durable, easy to clean, and large enough to carry towels, snacks, sunscreen, toys, and other family beach essentials. Its washable design also makes it easy to rinse off sand after your trip.
How much water should I bring per person for a beach day?
Plan to bring more water than you think you'll need. A good rule is at least one reusable water bottle per person, plus extra water for hot days or extended beach trips. Staying hydrated and frequent shade breaks are especially important for young children spending time in the sun.
Why is a shade tent better than a beach umbrella?
A shade tent provides better coverage as the sun moves throughout the day. It also covers a larger area which is great when you want to spread out and get some space. Not only that but they generally have better wind resistance than traditional beach umbrellas. I have had too many close calls with my old umbrella tumbling down the beach towards other families on windy days.
My toddler hates putting sunscreen on their face and will run away screaming. What can I do?
Apply sunscreen to little faces with a large make up brush or beauty blender! It is more comfortable and allows you to be more precise. You can turn it into an imaginary spa treatment to get them on board. When in doubt if you got all the spots, pop a sun hat on them for added protection.
Final Thoughts
The best family beach days aren't about bringing everything but rather bringing the right things.
With these 15 beach essentials packed and ready to go, you'll spend less time worrying about forgotten items and more time making memories together. Whether you're building sandcastles, hunting for seashells, or simply watching your kids splash in the waves, a little preparation goes a long way toward creating a relaxing and enjoyable beach trip for the whole family.
